Just a day later another tornado hit Winter Haven and also caused some damages. On April 10th there was a tornado in Bradenton that caused an estimated $1 million in catastrophic losses. That tornado picked up speeds to about 125 miles per hour. The strongest tornado was spotted around Laguna Beach, destroying a home and a small store. On April 13th four tornadoes touched down in Walton and Bay county, all with varying levels of intensity. ![]() Last week, Florida’s Marion county was hit by a tornado that downed power lines in the immediate area. In 2020 Florida had 54 tornadoes through September, not counting two tornadoes that touched down near Tampa in December.Įven in 2021 there have been instances of tornadoes seen throughout the sunshine state. Following that, we see that Florida had 29 tornadoes in 2019. Looking at the past few years, Florida had 57 tornadoes in the year 2017 and 46 tornadoes in the year of 2018. This statistic ranks it ahead of Tornado Alley states, with Kansas being put in second at 11.7 tornadoes averaged. Florida actually leads the nation with tornadoes with an average of 12.2 tornadoes per 10,000 square miles. Most people think of Tornado Alley as the tornado hotspot, but this ignores how Florida is home to many tornadoes every year. This is causing some to ask: is Florida in the middle of a new Tornado Alley? Florida Tornadoes By the Numbers In fact, the frequency of tornadoes in Florida has been steadily increasing. The aforementioned tornadoes are not in the middle of America, but situated are towards the southeast of the United States. These tornadoes result in catastrophic losses. The data seems to indicate that there are not only more tornadoes in number, but also more severe in impact. However, you might be shocked to realize that Florida gets more tornadoes than Tornado Alley. Tornado Alley refers to the central area of the United States where tornadoes are most common. Not only is this because of Dorothy, Toto, and the Wizard of Oz, but also because it is in the Tornado Alley.
